Butterflies on the Wall

Although it is still winter outside a few butterflies on the wall can bring the thought of summer inside.  I needed something to hang on the wall between my front door and window.  I wanted something a little outside the box, or in this case outside the canvas.

I started by creating custom paper Color Burst Concentrated Powder in Ultramarine Blue.  I have used Color Burst on watercolor paper but wanted a paper that was brighter white, so I tried the 80# Classic Linen Solar White Cardstock.  I LOVED the results.

The paper did not curl any more than watercolor paper when wet and did not fall apart.  I dried it with a heat tool and it dried fairly flat.

I created 3 sheets of the paper for the background and the results were similar.  Love the colors. I will be creating more papers with the 80# Classic Linen Solar White Cardstock.

I started with an 8" x 24" canvas. I tore the papers to create a funnel shape so that the butterflies could explode up and off the canvas.

I used Tombow Mono Mutli-Purpuse Liquid Glue to adhere the pieces to the canvas.  I chose the Tombow glue because has a longer open work time. I used a paintbrush to spread the glue to the edges of my paper to prevent the paper from lifting up and would not have any glue squish out onto the canvas.

While the glue dried, I punched and die cut butterflies in 5 sizes. I stared at the bottom with the smallest and worked my way up the canvas. Many of the the butterflies I just glued their bodies,  so their wings could be bent up like they were flying. I also punched a few butterflies from the blue paper to attach to the white spaces of the canvas.

When I hung it on the wall, I attached a few butterflies directly to the wall to create the feel of the butterflies exploding right off the canvas.

The canvas brightened up the wall.
