Holiday Countdown Series, Day 10

Hello everyone! Today I’ll be taking you through a trifold card design that uses partial die cutting and lots of ink blending to create a holiday night skyline with Christmas trees.

As always be sure to catch the full video below if you'd like to see the step by step process:

I start by taking one pre-scored Cougar White card base and die cutting a circle using the We R Memory Keepers nesting circle die set. I also cut out a circle from some Pop Tones Sour Apple card stock that is just a little bigger. This will help create an insert to go behind the opening in the card base.

I only wanted the top part of the inner circle to cut, so I position the paper and the die so that it hangs off the edge of the cutting plates. Where it hangs off, it will not be cut. Once I run it through I stop before it gets to the very end and roll back. Once removed, I see it’s cut successfully.

Next steps are to cut out a line of Christmas trees with an exacto knife. Once placed behind the opening in the card base, it fits perfectly with the trees popping up from the bottom.

For the background that will go behind the trees, I decide to do a big ink blended panel using Distress Oxides. They are so easy to blend. I stick with Seedless Preserves and Salty Ocean as I like how they look together for a dusky sort of night sky.

Once the blending looks good to me, I remove the masking tape and then add some water spritzes for some stars. Everything is dried before moving on the assemble.

I use Scor-tape to bring both A2 cards together and use a bone folder to make sure the folds are nice and precise. Then I use Tombow mono aqua glue to adhere the tree piece to the inside of the cut out on the front panel. I prefer to use liquid in this case so I can have some wiggle room to make sure the die cut fits.

With a Molotow paint pen, I add some details to the trees to make them look decorated with baubles and garlands. I then add large and small bursts of bright stars to the night sky. I add little dots as well for teeny tiny stars.

For the sentiment, I hand letter the words “merry and bright” with a pentel water brush filled with sumi ink. I wanted to keep this very simple and modern. For a secondary message on the inside, I write out “happy holidays” with the paint pen, and then fill out the page with more stars and dots.

For a final finishing touch, because the front looked too plain and needed some more detail, I create a faux-stitch line around the outside of the circle. And that’s all for today! I kept the inside of the card completely blank, as trifold cards like this are perfect for including long messages. You can even insert a family photo.

I hope you enjoyed and Happy Holidays!
