Unicorn Cake Topper

With summer holidays, special birthdays, and BBQs ahead, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate over the coming months.  Personalized cake toppers are one of my favorite ways of making an occasion extra special and quality cardstock from CutCardStock can make these pieces really shine.

Start by cutting the large unicorn shape out of Gold Mirrisparkle Cardstock.  Since I'm using an electronic cutting machine (Silhouette CAMEO), I also have the ability to cut the mirror image (to finish the back of the topper) and a shadow layer out of heavy vellum cardstock for a wispy glow around the edges.

Repeat this process with the number one using Pop-Tone Pink Lemonade Cardstock for the number and Silver Mirrisparkle Cardstock for the shadow layer.

Adhere the colored layered to the glittery shadow layers using foam tabs (I find this strong adhesive works well on glitter cardstock).  I cut the birthday girl's name out of Pop-Tone Grapesicle Cardstock and found these super thin strips of foam adhesive were perfect for adhering it to the silver glitter layer.

To assemble the cake topper, adhere the numbers behind the unicorn on each side.  Add bamboo skewers to the back side with hot glue, then adhere the front of the cake topper with foam adhesive, making sure to line the layers up perfectly while sandwiching the skewers.

The name can then be added to the front of the cake topper with more foam adhesive.

Since we were having cupcakes in addition to the birthday "smash cake", I decided to create a few cupcake toppers to match.  First, I cut all of the unicorn pieces out of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White and Gold, Silver, and Pink Mirrisparkle Cardstock using my Silhouette.

Then, I assembled the cupcake toppers with liquid glue and added a dot of hot glue to the back to secure the toothpick.

I love how the cake and cupcake toppers coordinate thanks to these gorgeous glitter cardstocks!
