Foiled Birthday Card

Are you a fan of all things shiny?  Hot foiling can be a great way to alter the look of lots of different types of cardstocks you might have.  To create this birthday card, I've used three types of white cardstock in beautiful finishes from the CutCardStock store and I love the subtle differences in texture they provide.

Start by trimming a piece of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock to 7" x 10" and scoring it down the center to form an A7 card base.  Then trim pieces of Basis Black Cardstock, Gold Bright Foil Cardstock, and White Limba Woodgrain Cardstock to 5" x 7", 4.875" x 6.875", and 4.75" x 6.75" respectively.  Cut a circle in the woodgrain panel as shown using a die or punch.

Apply gold foil to a piece of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock with floral foil plates and a hot foil machine like the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil System.  Trim a piece of White Linen Cardstock to 4.25" x 5.5" and apply gold foil to it using a scripty background foil plate.  (Both of these cardstocks foil beautifully and the linen texture adds a touch of elegance!)

Apply dye inks over the foiled floral images using a light hand and small sponge daubers.  Adding several shades of each color to the images adds a great deal of depth.  (The foil will resist dye inks, so any shiny areas will remain the original foil color.)  Die cut or fussycut the colored images out.

I wanted the flowers to really stand out on the card, so chose to lightly blend three pastel shades of ink over the linen background panel with a blending brush.

Assemble the card front as shown.  First adhere both the Basis Black Cardstock panel and the Gold Bright Foil Cardstock panel to the white A7 side-folding card base with tape runner.  After determining a good position for the foil script background behind the circular window, adhere this piece to the gold panel with tape runner as well.  Then, use a combination of foam squares and strips to pop the woodgrain panel on top.

(Note: You can turn this into a shaker card just by adhering a piece of clear acetate behind the woodgrain panel and adding sequins or shaker bits!)

Apply gold foil to Basis Black Cardstock with sentiment foil plates and die cut or fussycut them out.  (When I'm foiling something like sentiments, I like to make a bunch of them to choose from while I have all of my machines pulled out and save any leftovers for later.)

Adhere the flowers and sentiments to the front of the card using foam squares.  I added two layers of foam squares under the larger flower for even more dimension.
